I recently saw the video linked below about a poodle named Woody who was left to fend for himself after his owner passed away, and thought I’d quickly touch on the importance of a Pet Trust as part of your will or trust plan.
Many of our clients are unaware of Pet Trusts or that our companion animals can be provided for within estate plans. Woody was fortunate and eventually received help. But ensure your pets are properly cared for if something happens to you.
Generally, a pet trust provides for the care and maintenance of one or more companion animals in the event of the owner’s death or incapacity. The purpose is to insure that your pet receives the sort of care you would have provided if you were alive or had not become disabled.
